When I first had the idea of taking this trip, I was only planning for a month or two on the road. So I didn’t want to invest in a big minivan project. My thought was to buy a cheap old used minivan, remove the seats, throw a foam mattress and cooler in the back and hit the road.
Stop at the Visitor Center. They provide free maps and information. You can learn a little history about the place before you visit. Any questions you have, they’ve got the answer. They can tell you where camping is available, which sites allow dispersed camping, which sites have toilets, what areas are dog friendly etc.
It’s about a 2-hour drive from Moab to Capitol Reef National Park. Make sure you fill up with gas and grab snacks before hitting the road because there are not many places to stop along the way.
